Get Involved

We cannot do this alone.

Double the Size of our agency. Now place a shelter in each of the 12 counties we serve. As wonderful as this would be, we still couldn't domestic and sexual violence in the Coastal Bend without community involvement.

Volunteering

The Women's Shelter of South Texas uses volunteers in virtually every aspect of our operation. Maintenance, rape crisis advocacy, resident advocacy, legal advocacy, fundraising and crisis response team advocacy are always in need of volunteers.

Employment

As with any organization, the Women's Shelter of South Texas employs a core staff. Through turnover and expansion our agency often have vacancies which must be filled.

Donations

By definition, non-profit organizations do not make money, but certainly need it! The Women's Shelter of South Texas gladly and gratefully accepts monetary donations, as well as perishables and other sundries. Please consult our list of items most needed for donation

Advocate our Mission

One of the most important ways to get involved does not require a physical donation. By simply advocating our mission to end domestic and sexual violence in the Coastal Bend, you will be contributing to our long-term success. Reject violence in your life, and strive to engage your friends and family to follow your example. Practice responsible bystander behavior by not ignoring a potentially violent or controlling situation in public. Do not place yourself in danger, but do not minimize the abuse by ignoring it. Do not fall into the trap of gender stereotyping and victim blaming. Stop a potentially violent situation from occurring if you can see it coming, even though nobody else can. Imagine if you had to live under threats and abuse. Would you want to be ignored?

Being an advocate of domestic and sexual violence awareness is not easy. Our society values privacy and personal freedoms, and are slow to interfere in others lives. However, domestic and sexual violence has no right to be in anyone's life, public or private. We must challenge our comfort zones when confronted with violence threatened against ourselves or others.
